Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gẓʰā́s, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰžā́s (compare Avestan 𐬰𐬃 (zā̊), Persian زمین (zamin)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm (compare Russian земля́ (zemljá), Latvian zeme, Latin humus, Ancient Greek χθών (khthṓn)). Might be an innovation from earlier क्षम् (kṣám), which preserves the original feminine gender.
