Original meaning unknown. In oracle bone inscriptions, phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *qoŋ) : phonetic (OC *kuŋ) + (bird). The phonetic component is not (OC *ɡ·raʔ), but ancient form of (OC *kuŋ). Some variants also contained . In the Warring States period the below had corrupted into , making (OC *qoŋ) the new phonetic component.
