The in , the left part of the character, was the result of corruption of . , the right part of the character, evolved from (“to hold”). The original character depicted a kneeling person planting a sapling () into the soil (). is the original character of and .

The character (OC *ŋeds) was also often phonetically borrowed to represent another character (OC *hŋjeds).
