Etymology

From Old Japanese 過ぐ (sugu). First attested in the Kojiki of 712.[1]

Likely cognate with ()げる (sugeru, to pass a hole through something), () (sugu, straight; soon, adverb).

Reconstructed as deriving from Proto-Japonic *sunk-oi-.
