Pronunciation
- (Classical Latin) IPA(key): /ˈpen.na/, [ˈpɛnːä]
- (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): /ˈpen.na/, [ˈpɛnːä]
Noun
penna f (genitive pennae); first declension
Usage notes
- The two forms penna and pinna coexist in classical Latin, with the pe- spelling reflecting the phonetic evolution of the short Latin i.[1]
- Some say the two forms penna and pinna were originally two different nouns, the former from old pesna, petna (wing) from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- (“to fly”), the latter for pitna (a sharp point, cf. Spanish peña and Portuguese penha).
