[edit]Borrowed from Middle Low German swirren in the 17th century, from Old Saxon *swirrian, from Proto-West Germanic *swirrijan, from Proto-Germanic *swirrijaną, *swerrōną, from Proto-Indo-European *swer- (“to buzz, hum, whistle, sound, speak”). Cognate with Dutch zwieren, West Frisian swiere, Danish svirre, Swedish svirra.
