[edit]From Middle High German wahsen, from Old High German wahsan, from Proto-West Germanic *wahsan, from Proto-Germanic *wahsijaną, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weg-. Compare Low German wassen, Dutch wassen, West Frisian waakse, English wax, Danish vokse, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌷𐍃𐌾𐌰𐌽 (wahsjan).
