From Proto-Semitic *ṣbṭ- (to seize, take hold of, catch). Compare Akkadian 𒍝𒁀𒌈 (ṣabātum, to seize) and Biblical Hebrew צָבַט (ṣɔbaṭ, to reach, hold).
