From Old Church Slavonic тъ < Proto-Slavic *tъ < Proto-Balto-Slavic *tod < Proto-Indo-European *só, *séh₂, *tód (“‘this, that’”). Cognates include Lithuanian and Latvian tas, ta, Sanskrit स (sá), French ce, cet, and Old English se (English the).
