Inherited from Old East Slavic недѣлꙗ (nedělja, “Sunday”), from Proto-Slavic *neděľa (“Sunday”). Synchronically analyzable as не- (ne-, “not”) + де́л- (dél-, “work”) + -я (-ja). Originally used to mean Sunday, the day of rest.
