From Proto-Tai *ɣwaːjᴬ (water buffalo). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨤ᩠ᩅᩣ᩠ᨿ, Lao ຄວາຍ (khuāi), ᦩᦻ (xwaay), Tai Dam ꪁꪫꪱꪥ, Tai Nüa ᥑᥣᥭᥰ (xäay), Shan ၵႂၢႆး (kwáai), Ahom 𑜁𑜨𑜩 (khoy) or 𑜁𑜩 (khay), Zhuang vaiz, Saek ว๊าย.
