Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) and phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *li) : phonetic 彑 (OC *krads, “head”) + semantic 米 (“rice”) + semantic 糸 (“silk”) + semantic 廾 (“two hands”)- a sacrificial bird with its wings tied is held with two hands, the head of which is represented by '彑', the body of which is now represented by '米' (no connection to the meaning of '米'), the string which ties the wing represented by '糸' and the hands represented by '廾'. Or instead of a bird, a slave. The '彑' component was mentioned as a phonetic in Shuowen.
