Wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese 鉛筆(えんぴつ) (enpitsu, pencil), which was in turn a semantic readaptation of Chinese 鉛筆铅笔 (qiānbǐ, “pen made from lead powder”).
