Etymology[edit]

From Tuvaluan meaning "eight standing together" in reference to the eight inhabited islands of Tuvalu, although Tuvalu consists of nine islands. The ninth island was inhabited in 1949. Compare to *walu meaning "eight" in Proto-Austronesian.
