There are various hypotheses[1]:
- Perhaps from or influenced by Germanic, if the sense is "poison-sore"; see gall.
- From Proto-Indo-European *gel- (“form into a ball; ball”). Cognate with Latin glaeba, glomus and Proto-Germanic *klumpô (“mass, lump, clump; clasp”).

Compare Welsh gast (“a bitch”). Gaelic is possibly from Proto-Celtic *gasliyā. Pott has adduced Spanish galgo (“greyhound”), which, however, is founded on canis Gallicus. See gasradh for root.
