From Proto-Vietic *-niː, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *niʔ ~ *nih (this); cognate with Khmer នេះ (nih, this), Pacoh nâh (this), Khasi kane/une (this) and Car Nicobarese (these things). See also ni (this) (central Vietnamese dialects) and nay (now).
