Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀖𑀭 (ghara), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀭𑁆𑀳 (*garha), from a metathesized form of Sanskrit गृह (gṛhá). Compare Northern Hindko کَہار(kahār). Far cognate with Persian کرت(kart) and English garth / yard, Scottish Gaelic gàrradh (garden; wall) and Irish garraí (garden; small enclosure; halo), among others. Doublet of گَڑھ(gaṛh).
