From a refashioning of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old French cheüe, chue (from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin *caduta) based on cheoite (corresponding to an analogous Vulgar Latin form *cadecta), feminine past participle of cheoir, the older form of choir. Compare chu, past participle of choir.
