desinfectar (first-person singular present desinfecto, first-person singular preterite desinfectei, past participle desinfectado)

  1. (European Portuguese spelling) Pre-reform spelling (until 1990) of desinfetar. Still used in countries where the agreement hasn't come into effect; may occur as a sporadic misspelling.
  2. (Brazil, neologism) to un-infect; to disinfect in a medical setting

Usage notes

In Brazil, this term became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic to refer to cleaning surfaces and carrying out other procedures in order to prevent the virus from being spread.[1] The form desinfetar is the more common, prescribed form.
