From Middle Vietnamese gió, from Proto-Vietic *k-jɔːʔ ~ *kʰjɔːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kjaal; cognate with Chut [Rục] kəjɔː³, Arem kajɑːʔ, Pacoh cudyial, Khmer ខ្យល់ (khyɑl), Bahnar kial. Munda cognates include Santali ᱦᱚᱭ (hôy).
