From Proto-Bahnaric *kjaː₁l, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kjaal. Cognate with Cua khiːl, Nyaheun kjew ~ kjoː, Khmer ខ្យល់ (khyɑl), Old Mon kyāl (modern Mon ကျ (ca)), Vietnamese gió.
