ilmi
Finnish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
ilma (“air”) + -i (“lative ending”)
Pronunciation[edit]
Adverb[edit]
ilmi
- public, known, to the daylight, to the open (ceasing to be secret, unknown or hidden)
- (as modifier) completely, very much
- ilmiselvä ― obvious / completely clear
- ilmi elävä ― very much alive
- (as modifier) outright, full
- Kinastelu muuttui vähitellen ilmiriidaksi.
- The bickering gradually turned into an outright fight.
Usage notes[edit]
As an adverb, ilmi usually but not necessarily implies a change of state from unknown to known and so is mostly used with verbs that express change or movement. It is rarely used to describe a state of being known: asia on ilmi (“the matter is out in the open”) is possible, but rare. As a modifier, it is usually written as an open (spaced) compound together with adjectives, adverbs, and nouns, but only as a closed compound with verbs. Some commonly used collocations may be written both ways: ilmiselvä / ilmi selvä, ilmiliekki / ilmi liekki, ilmiriita / ilmi riita, and yet others are always closed: ilmiantaja, ilmianto, ilmiasu, ilmitulo.
Synonyms[edit]
- (to the open): julki
- (to be revealed): osoittautua
- (to reveal): paljastaa
- (to report): ilmiantaa
- (completely): täysin
- (real, true): todellinen
