Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Latin laxō, laxāre (to let), via its byform *lassō, *lassāre, evidenced by Romanian lăsa, Aromanian alas, dialectal Italian lassare.

Many scholars also consider the possibility of a borrowing from Italian lasciare, although it is less likely due to the term's early attestation date and presence in all dialects, as well as the initial vowel /ə/ ~ /i/.
