Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Korean 태권도 (taegwondo, “taekwondo”), a Sino-Korean formation written in Hanja as 跆拳道 (taegwondo), from 跆 (tae, “to tread, trample”) + 拳 (gwon, “fist”) + 道 (do, “way, path”), literally “trampling-fist-way” and conventionally interpreted as “the way of the foot and fist”. The name was proposed in 1955 by Choi Hong-hi.
