    Borrowed from Korean 태권도 (taegwondo, taekwondo), a Sino-Korean formation written in Hanja as 跆拳道 (taegwondo), from (tae, to tread, trample) + (gwon, fist) + (do, way, path), literally “trampling-fist-way” and conventionally interpreted as “the way of the foot and fist”. The name was proposed in 1955 by Choi Hong-hi.

    Compare the parallel borrowings Norwegian Nynorsk taekwondo, Danish taekwondo, German Taekwondo, Finnish taekwondo, Hungarian taekwondo and Portuguese taekwondo.
