Etymology
[edit]Calque of Literary Chinese 過則勿憚改 (guòzéwùdàngǎi), from The Analects:[1]
- 子曰く、「君子重からざれば則ち威あらず、学べば則ち固ならず。忠信を主とし、己に如かざる者を友とすること無かれ、過ちては則ち改むるに憚ること勿れ。」
- Shi iwaku, “Kunshi omokarazareba sunawachi i arazu, narabeba sunawachi ko narazu. chūshin o shu to shi, onore ni shikazaru mono o tomo to suru koto nakare, ayamachite wa sunawachi aratamuru ni habakaru koto nakare.”
- The Master said, "If the scholar be not grave, he will not call forth any veneration, and his learning will not be solid. Hold faithfulness and sincerity as first principles. Have no friends not equal to yourself. When you have faults, do not fear to abandon them."
