In the oracle bone script, a phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *klɯːʔ): phonetic 巳 (OC *ljɯʔ, *lɯs) + semantic 攴.
Since the small seal script, the phonetic component has been changed to 己 (OC *kɯʔ).
