  1. (transitive) to get, to receive, to come into possession of (anything ranging from concrete to abstract inputs such as news, gift, punishment, et cetera)
    Ze heeft van haar familie een huwelijkskado gekregen.
    She received a wedding gift from her family.
  2. (transitive) to get, to be presented with
    Ik heb geprobeerd mijn televisie aan te sluiten, maar ik krijg alleen sneeuw.
    I tried to connect up my television, but I only get static.
  3. (copulative) to get, to (manage to) cause to become
    Ik krijg mijn auto niet gestart!
    I can't get my car started!
  4. (auxiliary) Used to form a passive sentence with a ditransitive verb, with the original indirect object becoming the subject of krijgen.
    Hij kreeg het cadeautje van/door mij gegeven.
    He was given the gift by me.
  5. (transitive) to catch (a disease), to become ill with
    Ik heb een verkoudheid gekregen.
    I've caught a cold.
    Krijg de tering!
    Literally "Catch tuberculosis", but more similar in force to "fuck you".
