From Proto-Finnic *vasta, from Proto-Finno-Permic *wasta (a place opposite or across). Shares its origin with vasta- (counter-, anti-, opposite). Related to Estonian vast, Ingrian vassa, Karelian vasta, Livonian vastõ, Livvi vastah, Veps vast, Võro vasta, Votic vassa, Northern Sami vuostá (towards, against), Erzya вастомс (vastoms, to meet), Moksha васта (vasta, spot, place) and probably Eastern Mari ваштареш (vaštareš, against).

From Proto-Finnic *vasta. Probably from earlier *kvasta, either from Proto-Slavic *xvostъ, or of Germanic origin, compare Swedish kvast.
