Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑁄𑀡𑁆𑀡 (soṇṇa), from Sanskrit सौवर्ण (saúvarṇa), from सुवर्ण (suvárṇa), from सु- (su-, good, pleasing) +‎ वर्ण (varṇa, hue, color). Cognate with Marathi सोने (sone), ਸੋਨਾ (sonā), Nepali सुन (suna), Gujarati સોનું (sonũ), Odia ସୁନା (suna), Bengali সোনা (śōna), Assamese সোণ (xün).
