From Sanskrit क्षत्रिय (kṣatriya, kṣatriya: the ruling and military elite, being one of the four social classes in the society). Compare Pali khattiya, from which Thai ขัตติยะ was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ក្សត្រិយ៍ (ksat).
