Chinese[edit]

Glyph origin[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *njaŋ) : semantic (water) + phonetic (OC *snaŋ).

Etymology 1[edit]

simp. and trad.

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-naːŋ (heavy; thick (of liquids); viscous); cognate with Mizo hnâng (thick; viscous) (Schuessler, 2007; STEDT). Coblin (1986) also compares this with Burmese နှင်း (hnang:, dew; mist).
