From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(d/n)waj (to hang from; to cling to; creeper), whence Burmese နွယ် (nwai, creeper), Jingpho noi (to hang). See (OC *djol, “to hang down”), to which the word is possibly related, for more (STEDT).
