Etymology

Appears to be a Japanese coinage from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Chinese-derived elements, as a compound of (gun, army, military, troops) +‎ (hai, arrangement, positioning). The hai changes to bai as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
