From Mandarin (hàn), from the dynasty founder Liu Bang's short-lived realm in Sichuan and Shaanxi among China's Eighteen Kingdoms, named for the Qin Empire's Hanzhong Commandery, headquartered at a city which also became known as Hanzhong
