Letter [edit]

è lower case (upper case È)

  1. The letter e with a grave accent.

Usage notes [edit]

  • In French, Italian, Occitan and Catalan the è is pronounced /ɛ/ as opposed to é which is pronounced /e/.
  • In English the è is used only poetically in order to indicate that it is pronounced /ɛ/ as opposed to mute. In other words, it indicates a departure, for poetic purposes, from the usual pronunciation of the so-modified e.
  • In Italian it is used to indicate a stressed e, /ɛ/, at the end of a word.
