Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ˀjuːᴮ (“to be (in a place)”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩀᩪ᩵, Lao ຢູ່ (yū), Lü ᦊᦴᧈ (ẏuu¹), Tai Dam ꪤꪴ꪿, Shan ယူႇ (yùu), Ahom 𑜊𑜥 (jʸū), Bouyei qyus, Zhuang youq.
