Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps Sino-Tibetan. Compare Chepang [script needed] (maiʔ, meat), Bodo (India) [script needed] (bʏiʔ, deer), Liangmai Naga [script needed] (ka-, meat), Northern Naga *me:y "meat, flesh"; a single etymon for "meat" and "deer" is also found in Tibetan (sha, meat) and ཤྭ (shwa, deer) (Schuessler, 2007). If so, another semantic parallel is Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/ɡ-la (flesh, meat, deer), whence Tibetan གླ (gla, musk deer) but Newar [script needed] (la, meat, animal) and [script needed] (, flesh, meat).
