Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *reːŋ): semantic  ‎(tooth) + phonetic  ‎(OC *ren, *reŋ, *reŋs, *reːŋ, *reːŋs) – tooth being associated with age. Compare English long in the tooth ‎(old) and don't look a gift horse in the mouth ‎((to check teeth for age)).
