Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 機 or 幾.

- The [ki] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The seventh character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is カ and the next character is ク. The equivalent hiragana character is き.
