Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 於, taken from the left part of the character.

- The [o] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The fifth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is エ and the next character is カ. The equivalent hiragana character is お.
