[edit] Etymology
Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 乎.
[edit] Katakana character
ヲ (romaji wo)
- (obsolete) The [wo] syllable.
- The [o] syllable.
- The forty-seventh character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is ヱ and the next character is ン. The equivalent hiragana character is を.
[edit] Usage notes
Because the hiragana equivalent, を, is used almost exclusively as the direct object particle, and particles are always written in hiragana, ヲ is seldom actually used.
