Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 利.

1. The [ri] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
2. The fortieth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is ラ and the next character is ル. The equivalent hiragana character is り.
