Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 曽.

1. The [so] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
2. The fifteenth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is セ and the next character is タ. The equivalent hiragana character is そ.
