Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 流.

1. The [ru] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
2. The forty-first character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is リ and the next character is レ. The equivalent hiragana character is る.
