[edit] Etymology

Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji , taken from the left part of the character.

[edit] Katakana character

(romaji i)

  1. The /i/ phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
  2. The second character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is (a) and the next character is (u). The equivalent hiragana character is (i).

[edit] Usage notes

(i) is used to represent the sound of the mora /i/ in words of non-Japanese origin. To represent the vowel sound /i/ as a component of non-Japanese syllables with corresponding Japanese morae, the other katakana characters are used instead, e.g. リ (ri), ミ (mi) or ヒ (hi). The scaled-down version (i) is used instead for the vowel sound /i/ in syllables that begin with a consonant sound and do not correspond with Japanese morae.
