Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 己.

- The [ko] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The tenth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is ケ and the next character is サ. The equivalent hiragana character is こ.
