Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 末.

1. The [ma] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
2. The thirty-first character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is ホ and the next character is ミ. The equivalent hiragana character is ま.
