Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 散.

- The [sa] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The eleventh character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is コ and the next character is シ. The equivalent hiragana character is さ.
