Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 宇, taken from the top part of the character.

- The [u] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The third character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is イ and the next character is エ. The equivalent hiragana character is う.
