North Levantine Arabic

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

From Arabic وَصِلَ (waṣila, to arrive). The alternative nonpast vowelings point to complications resolving the imperfective و (w), presumably similarly to the complications that led to the form of Standard Arabic يَصِل (yaṣil). Interdialectal borrowing may also be at play, such as between dialects that had elided the original و (w) and dialects that could not accept such a form unadapted.

Verb

[edit]

وِصِل (wiṣil) I (non-past يُوصَل (yūṣal), active participle وَاصِل (wāṣil) or وَصْلَان (waṣlān))

  1. to arrive

Verb

[edit]

وِصِل (wiṣil) I (non-past يُوصَال (yuṣāl) or يُوصَال (yuṣál))

  1. (Keserwan and Matn, Lebanon) alternative form of وِصِل (wiṣil, to arrive)
(Can we find and add a quotation of Qornet Chahouâne from Fleisch 1974 to this entry?)
(Can we find and add a quotation of the r/arabs dialect project to this entry?)
